Octopus mobiilisovelluskilpailu opiskelijoille

Mobiiliratkaisujen kehitysympäristö Octopus järjestää jälleen mobiilisovelluskilpailun opiskelijoille. Kilpailussa 1-4 hlön tiimien tehtävä on ideoida ja toteuttaa mobiilisovellus eli kännykässä toimiva ohjelma.

Kilpailussa on kaksi sarjaa, Symbian-sarja (ohjelmointikieli C++) ja Avoin sarja (ohjelmointikieli vapaa). C++-työllä saa osallistua jompaan kumpaan sarjaan.

Kilpailuun rekisteröidytään osoitteessa http://www.omsk.fi tammikuun loppuun mennessä. Rekisteröidyttäessä täytyy olla tiedossa vasta joukkueen kapteeni ja kilpailutyön aihe. Joukkuetta saa ja kilpailutyötä tulee täydentää nettisivuilla kevään kuluessa. Valmis työ on jätettävä samaan osoitteeseen 4.5. mennessä.

Loppukilpailu, johon selviää 5 parasta joukkuetta molemmissa sarjoissa, käydään Oulussa 23.5.2007.

Kilpailua tukevat Nokia ja Oulu Innovation. Kilpailun suojelija on Yrjö Neuvo.

Kurssi lukuvuonna 2006-2007

Kurssin toteutuksesta lukuvuonna 2006-2007 vastaa Peter Antoniac. Kyselkää siis häneltä kurssiin liittyvistä asioista (englanniksi tietysti). Kurssin online -osuuden URL tullaan ilmoittamaan myöhemmin.

Toinen tentti / Second exam

Kurssin toinen ja viimeinen tentti kevään 06 -toteutukselle järjestetään alkysyksyllä. Seuraa tarkemmin syksyn tenttiaikataulua kunhan se julkistetaan. Tentti järjestetään yhtäaikaa myös Kajaanissa.

The second and last exam for the Spring 06 course implementation will be arranged in the beginning of Fall semester. Please check the schedule for the Fall examinations when it is published. The exam will also be held at the same time in Kajaani.

11.5.2006 Tentti / Exam

Mobiilijärjestelmien ohjelmointi -kurssin tentti on salissa IT115 11.5.2006 12-15. Tentti pidetään samaan aikaan kuin luennot ja tentti kestää kolme tuntia. Tentin järjestelyt poikkeavat normaalista, että tentistä saa poistua vasta tunnin jälkeen. Pyydän ilmoittamaan minulle ilmoittautumisesi sähköpostilla, koska erillistenttiin ei voi ilmoittautua Weboodin kautta. Ilmoittaudu 10.5.2006 mennessä.

Exam is held 11.5.2006 from 12.00 to 15.00 in the room IT115. Students can leave after the first hour of the exam. Sign up for the exam before 10.5.2006 by sending email to me.

Bug found in given code

There is a bug in the CMobopolyAppUi::ConstructL(), which can cause memory leaks, if any of the methods called in ConstructL leaves before the SetDefaultViewL. See the code below (comments stripped out).

void CMobopolyAppUi::ConstructL(){ ... iAppView1 = CMobopolyGameView::NewL(); iAppView2 = CMobopolyPropertyView::NewL(); AddViewL(iAppView1); AddViewL(iAppView2); SetDefaultViewL(*iAppView1); }

Now, if AddViewL(iAppView1) fails, the iAppView1 and iAppView2 objects are leaked from the memory. Also, if AddViewL(iAppView2) fails, iAppView2 is leaked. The reasons are:

CMobopolyAppUi does not destroy the views, since the ownership of the view is transferred to the CAknViewAppUi when AddViewL is called. CAknViewAppUi destroys the views as the application is shut down. You can see this from the fact that CMobopolyAppUi does not have a destructor that would destroy the view objects.
AddViewL does not destroy the view if it fails. It can fail when growing the size of the dynamic array that holds pointers to the views (see aknviewappui.h from epoc32\include).

The item 2 is just an assumption, since the S60 documentation (at least up to 2nd Ed FP 3) do not have any documentation of AddViewL at all (nada, zero, nil, nothing whatsoever). 3rd Ed says just that the AddViewL registers the view by calling CCoeAppUi::RegisterViewL. So the following discussion assumes that AddViewL just tries to append the view pointer to the array of view pointers, and if extending the array (when necessary) fails due to out of memory, AddViewL just leaves and does not delete the view that was to be added to the array.

One solution would be to change the order of the lines so that immediately after creating the view object is is added to the ui by calling AddViewL. This would not help, since the view object would still not be added to the ui — practically the only reason why AddViewL would leave. Since this is not documented, we cannot really know what happens inside the method.

The correct solution would then be to do it like this:

Here, the view object is created as a local variable using the NewLC variant (already included in the code), which adds the view to the cleanup stack and leaves it there (thus the name NewLC). Then the view is added to the CAknViewAppUi (base class of CMobopolyAppUi) that takes the ownership of the view object. If this fails (there is no more memory to expand the array), the view object is destroyed by the error handling mechanism while handling the leave. After successfully adding the view, the view1 pointer is assigned to the member variable pointer iAppView1. Then, the second view is created.

Adding a destructor to CMobopolyAppUi that would destroy the view objects would not be a correct solution, since the AddViewL gives ownership of the views to base class CAknViewAppUi, which destroys the views — destroying objects twice leads to crash.

Fix your code to follow the solution above, which will also be included in the example solution published after the deadlines have passed.

Muutos Symbian -työn vaatimuksiin / Change to the Symbian requirements

Symbian -työn vaatimuksena on mainittu se että se on käännyttävä komentoriviltä komennoilla bldmake bldfiles ja abld build wins udeb. Koska joissain installaatioissa ja/tai ympäristöissä tämä on osoittautunut ongelmalliseksi, sallitaan työssä myös sen kääntyminen IDE:n kautta importtaamalla Symbian -projekti IDEen (esim. Visual Studio) ja kääntämällä se sieltä käsin. Pitäkää kuitenkin huolta että sekä bld.inf että mmp -tiedostot ovat ajan tasalla (sisältävät kaikki tarvittavat tiedostot kääntämiseen myös komentoriviltä käsin).

Tarkistuslista, jota käytetään Symbian C++ harjoitustöiden tarkistamisessa, on julkistettu. Lista löytyy harjoitustyön esittelysivulta. Listaan liittyvät kommentit ja kysymykset voi osoittaa paikalliselle assistentille, joka vie tarvittaessa asiaa eteenpäin.

Q: GetNextPlayerState is const method, but if I want to use a integer member variable to keep track which index contains the current data to be fetched, how can I change this member variable? Since the method is const, changing member variable values is not possible.

A: mutable TInt iCurrentDataIndex;
I stress the word mutable…
